Physical Education

At St Thomas, Physical Education (PE), sport and physical activity play a unique and crucial role in the physical development, health and well-being of our children. It is intended that our children, irrespective of their innate ability, will enjoy success and be motivated to further develop their individual sporting potential.

Physical Education

We want all children to lead full and active lives through participation in a wide variety of enjoyable and inspiring physical activities in a safe and supportive environment, in both competitive and non-competitive sports and games. This is offered within high quality, teacher led PE lessons, where children are encouraged to better themselves within Gymnastics, dance and games and swimming. The children will demonstrate what they have learned to their peers. They will also use their knowledge attained from PE lessons in sporting activities, such as: Sports Day and inter school competitions. In addition, afterschool clubs can further develop their skills within inter-school competitions. We also encourage seeking out sports clubs in our community for children to further their love for a specific sport.

We strive to ensure that all children will make good progress from their own personal starting points, being constantly assessed during the sessions and challenged to improve and develop aspects of the PE being taught, to their full potential. Children will know how to use a range of techniques confidently and consistently such as: throwing, catching, striking and fielding, in order to participate in a game. They will be able to use space and movement to prevent the opposition from gaining control of a game. They will know the correct sporting vocabulary depending on the activity. They will be able to demonstrate the skills required to perform their dance. They will be able to work independently and as part of a group to perform to a piece of music. They will recall styles of dance and their features.

The school benefits from termly sessions run by Sevenoaks School as part of their outreach programme.  Children take part in cricket, basketball and tennis coaching.

St Thomas' Catholic Primary School: Physical Education Progression of Skills

Children will learn a variety of skills. They will be able to understand the mutual respect needed to compete in a sporting competition. This will be evident through the way they conduct themselves when they compete. They will be tolerant of the different faiths and beliefs that contribute to team competitions locally, nationally and internationally. The children will understand that they are to be compliant with the rules of a game and that we live in a democratic society where both men and women can play mixed sports. Children may demonstrate knowledge of the history of dance, and its cultural impact on the world and be able to reflect on different styles of dance.
